David Bowie (1947-2016....)
I know I probably should NEVER do something like this, but I just laid out Bowie's discography next to my own life. When he was 20, he released his first album. When he was 30, he released "Heroes." When he was 40, he released "Never Let Me Down" (this after just doing "Labyrinth" a year or so earlier). When he was 50, he released "Earthling". He released 5 more albums after that, for a total of 27 studio albums, 9 live albums, 46 compilation albums, 5 extended plays (EPs), 111 singles, including 5 UK number one singles, and 3 soundtracks. Bowie also released 13 video albums and 51 music videos (courtesy: wikipedia).
Now, granted, I'm not David Bowie. But I think the evidence that he presents of a lifetime of redefining oneself, never resting on one's laurels (seriously, how many times did he retire and comeback?) and continuing to just f**king CREATE is one of the things I shall forever owe to him and his pretty amazing example.
I never met the man, I only ever got the chance to enjoy the art he created and shared with us. And yet I will miss him, strangely. I shall find the world a bit less artistically weird, and I do not think to find another of his like in this cosmos. For surely he was - and shall continue to be - a celestial entity. A man of space. Of infinite scope, and a being of the eternal echo.
And, having cast his inspiration upon us all, I shall do what I can to show my gratitude through creation.
Let us all, in gratitude, be just a little more strange going forward.
And I leave you with this. Starman, as performed years ago by Bowie himself. I'll be listening to this a few more times today on repeat, myself.
